Sketching Within The Lines

I’ve proudly stated on my GrabCAD account that the process of modeling Lego files has been accurately measuring the physical parts via calipers and giving them SOLIDWORKS flesh. However there are limitations in the form of my Lego library not being quite being what it once was as a child. This has resulted in me having to resort to a process that we all run into from time to time that SOLIDWORKS has either foreseen like a time traveling wizard or accommodated like a caring nurse. This tool I speak of is Sketch Picture.

It's not just for cylinders!

Wrapping Text Onto A Conical Face in SOLIDWORKS

Text wrapping is a fairly simple tool to use within SOLIDWORKS part modeling when you are applying a wrap to a flat face or around a cylinder, but when you run into a part with a changing radius and a rounded face, the wrap feature becomes a little more complex.  For this example, we will wrap text onto a conical feature.

The New SOLIDWORKS 2016 Mate Controller

Control Your Mates!

SOLIDWORKS 2016 has brought us quite a few new features, and one of them is the Mate Controller. This slick new feature can control multiple existing mates at once, so you can change angles, distances, and percentages at the same time. It has the capability of saving multiple “positions”, similar to configurations, and then running them through an animation.

Top Enhancements for Drawings in SOLIDWORKS 2016

Attention: Drawn... to SOLIDWORKS 2016!

SOLIDWORKS Model Based Definition has been out a little while now and may well be a game changer for many customers' detailing and design workflows. But, for those of us not yet ready to adopt this product, we're still using traditional drawing files. MBD may be the new kid in town, but SOLIDWORKS 2016 definitely comes with plenty of new tools for drawings. Here's my top five, many of which were brought about because of enhancement requests by users like you!

SOLIDWORKS Electrical Black Box

The deep dark secret - NOT

SOLIDWORKS Electrical Black Box

Sometimes the name can through you off track esspecially with a name like "Black Box".  No I am not talking about the one found in a plane after the crash.  I am talking about the symbol used within SOLIDWORKS Electrical 2016. Simply stated a "black Box" is a generic schematic symbol used which has a number of inputs and outputs and what happens inside the box doesn matter at this point.  This sysmbol can be used on the fly and can later be assoicated to a manufacturer or a specific part like a moter drive.  In SOLIDWORKS Electrical 2016 the "black Box" function is extremely easy to use as you will see.  It can also be manipulate just as easy to fit what ever needs you may have or want.  So lets take a look.

Multi-sheet custom property source.

Hidden Gem in SOLIDWORKS 2016 Drawings

I had a case the other day where the customer was needing to make a drawing with multiple sheets. He had a template set up with linked properties in notes and the title block. But all of the sheets were not of the same part, and the linked properties were all pulling from the views from sheet1. He had recently upgraded to 2016 and I was not aware that what he wants is available.

We looked over the options and I find this in the Document Properties/Drawing Sheets.
